July Book Club
We are big believers in self education. Learning and understanding from a position of interest to you and in the best way for each individual. Reading can provide a brilliant tool for us all to learn at our own pace and at our own speed.
With millions of texts out there covering thousands more subjects there is always something to interest everyone. As part of the Awakening Project we have another great book for you this month focusing in on the importance of Ocean Protection and just how our daily actions affect the entire Ocean ecosystem.
The World is Blue: How our fate and the Ocean's are one - Dr. Sylvia Earle
This book is an incredibly passionate plea to reason by one of the most reputable and inspiring scientists working in the field of ocean exploration and conservation today. Dr. Earle is a well known and well loved activist for ocean protection in many circles and her many years of experience and her deep knowledge of the ocean and its ecosystems make this book a perfect blend of facts and science, twinned with a campfire feeling of the village elder spreading wisdom to her eager audience.
It is broken down into three main sections and each is delivered in great detail that all of us, from scientist to civilian can easily understand and relate to. Section one covers the actions of humans in the ocean from fishing and hunting to oil drilling and plastic pollution. Section two begins to look at the problems our actions are creating and the even bigger dangers looming on the horizon if we do nothing. With the final section touching on just how we can start to turn this around. I must say I am really loving reading this book, I'm learning lots and find myself pausing to reflect on almost every page. It is beautifully written, at times emersing you in the underwater world with the descritions so lifelike that you can not only see but feel the environment that Dr Earle has spent decades exploring, documenting and enjoying. With many great insights and many inspired ideas this book is a must for all environmentalists and anyone who has ever fallen in love with the sea.
