February 2019 Book Club
We are big believers in self education. Learning and understanding from a position of interest to you and in the best way for each individual. Reading can provide a brilliant tool for us all to learn at our own pace and at our own speed. With millions of texts out there covering thousands more subjects there is always something to interest everyone. As part of the Awakening Project we have another great book for you this month focusing in on the topics of education and the potential for 'unschooling' and home-schooling initiatives.
How Children Learn - John Holt
A classic book on home-schooling and the potential for alternative schooling in young children, this now 50 year old book by John Holt makes it clear that, for young children, "Learning is as natural as breathing."
Broken down into 9 equally valuable and expressive chapters Holt manages to encapsulate all of the wisdom he has gathered on education and young children and focus this information into each area of interest, be it reading, art, math, sport, play and more. Within even the first few pages you can already see the huge potential of each child and the real and obvious possibility that home education can provide for children to develop and learn at a comfortable and rewarding pace. Without the pressure and stress of modern schooling, balancing their interests and passions with key skills and developing a form of education that is more than just remember, repeat, forget for the sake of an examination or grade.
It is a detailed and beautifully written book by one of the worlds leading child education authorities. John Holt will make you rethink and re-imagine education, bringing it all back to what it is intended to do, inspire and prepare kids to be part of this world. If you are interested in homeschooling then I highly recommend this book and many others that Holt has been so kind to provide for us over the years.
If you have a book you want to share with us and our book club let us know and we will get in in there. Check out the rest of the book club here.
